TEACHING — Central Saint Martins (CSM), MA Art Science program, 24th Feb 2016
A day of teaching for the MA Art Science students, under the theme "Transient Interfaces — Designing for Transience". I will present silk and its historical notion as network agent, and suggested ways in how such ‘networks’ and ‘infrastructures’ might take shape when bodies are being turned into digital platforms. The day consists of a morning session with lecture and group discussion, followed by a practical hands-on seminar in the afternoon.
LECTURE & SEMINAR — Royal College of Art (RCA),Fashion Department, 16th Oct 2015
I have been invited by Prof. Zowie Broach to give a lecture in the RCA's fashion department. The lecture will be followed by an informal seminar on reverse engineered silk, its networked dimensions into culture, industry, and the human body.
Q & A PANEL — Royal College of Art (RCA), Critical Historical Studies, 20th Nov 2015
I have been invited by Emily Candela and Dr Livia Rezende to support the Critical Historical Studies (CHS) lecture series "Critical Agendas" for the session "From Meat to Mars: Critical Interventions in Science and Design". The contribution consisted of a semi- structured Q & A that enabled students insights and active participation, as well as a thinking space on critical Design & Science practice.
TEACHING — Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). 7th– 11th Sep 2015
Another time in Zurich! Together with Clemens Winkler and Luke Franzke, I will be leading the second Z-Modul of the year (a week-long, school-wide transdisciplinary teaching module). We continue the "Transient Electronics — Local Resources" theme, to explore transient materials, such as silk, carbon, and phospor-based electroluminescence.
TEACHING — Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). 9th– 13th Feb 2015
Together with Clemens Winkler and Luke Franzke, I will be leading a week-long, school-wide transdisciplinary teaching module (Z- Modul) on "Transient Electronics — Local Resources".
▶ The teaching module will take place at recently opened Toni building — the new home of ZHdK in Zurich!
I will begin my Visiting Scientist role with Tufts University with a 3–month research residency as part of my current Ph.D. research on the bio-digital, silk, and potentially emerging human futures. This initial residency will continue with further visits throughout the year 2015.
EXHIBITION — Victoria & Albert Museum, London, 24th & 25th Sep 2016
PANEL — The Arts Catalyst Opening Week (Kings Cross), 29th Jan 2016
The Arts Catalystopens its doors to its new Centre for Art, Science, and Technology in CW04/2016. I'm honoured for being invited to the panel 'Assembly on Useful Art, Science and Technology’. Contributing artists, scientists and experts to Notes from the Field… also include Alistair Hudson, Jonathan Rosenhead (BSSRS), Dimitri Launder, Lisa Ma, Dr Sylvia Nagl, and Graham Harwood.
▶ We already look forward to the exchanges in Brighton this summer!
EXHIBITION — Nationalmuseum Stockholm, Sweden. Sep– Nov 2015 I am delighted to announce that Biophilia will be on display as part of the upcoming exhibition "Hemma i Framtiden" (Our Domestic Futures) at the National Museum in Stockholm, Sweden.
TALK — London LASER, University of Westminster, London. 16th Jun 2015
I will be speaking about reverse engineered silk and designing for transience at London LASER [Hosted by Central Saint Martins MA Art and Science and LENS; Held at University of Westminster (Broad Vision art/science research and learning; and CREAM). In association with Leonardo®/ISAST (the International Society for Art, Science, and Technology)].
TEACHING — Parsons New School for Design, New York. 20th Nov 2014
I will be giving a school-wide lecture to Parson's postgraduate students on "Design and Bio–Digital Interfaces" as part of the Design for the 21st Century lecture series at the Auditorium, (room A106) Alvin Johnson/ J.M. Kaplan Hall.
▶ See a write-up of the lecture on the blog of the MA Transdisciplinary students here.
WORKSHOP — DRHA conference, London. 30th Aug 2014
The Living Assemblies workshop, led by myself and Clemens Winkler, pilots at the DRHA conference 2014 at Greenwich University, London.
CONFERENCE — Umeå Institute of Design, Sweden. 16th– 19th Jun, 2014
I have been invited as panel speaker by Culture Lab in Newcastle to the exciting 2014 DRS conference, organised by the Design Research Society. The conference will be concerned with Design’s Big Debates and stimulate fresh view points and discussion on future directions for design research.
KEYNOTE — DRS 2016, Brighton Dome, 28th Jun 2016.
As part of the opening ceremony of the Design Research Society conference this year, I have been invited by Prof Cameron Tonkinwise to give a keynote debate on the topic“(Speculative) Futures in Design Research”, alongside with Prof Ramia Mazé and Prof Richard Coyne. My debate talk with the title "Speculative Subtlety", focused onSpeculative Critical Design (SCD) and its capacity to traverse limits of existing knowledge systems by drawing attention to the boundaries of the certain. My keynote stressed in particular the importance of subtlety in the use and understanding of Speculative Critical Design as an evolving stance and design practice.
TEACHING — Royal College of Art (RCA), MA Textiles program, 22nd Jan 2016
‘TEST BED 4 – Textiles as an Interface’is the fourth in a series of four events exploring the nature of the discipline, new contexts for Textiles, the impact of new materials, new ways of thinking and research projects within the Programme. We explore the role Textiles can play as an interface — from the traditional example being the interface between ourselves and our environments through the clothes that we wear, to advanced materials and their shifting implications for society.
This RCA internal seminar will be lead by myself and Dr Dan Lockton, (Visiting Research Tutor, IDE) and will take place in the Upper Gulbenkian Gallery.
I have been invited by the MIT Media Lab (Tangible Media Group, led by Prof. Hiroshi Ishii) to give a talk on my research into Design, Silk and the Bio-Digital as part of the Inflating Curiosityevent to take place at lecture theatre 1 at the Royal College of Art Campus in Kensington.
Together with Dr Dan Lockton and Prof Dr Peter Lloyd, I will be working on the conference experience for the 50th anniversary conference of the Design Research Society to take place across two brilliant venues — the Brighton Royal Pavillion Estate and at University of Brighton, School of Art, Design, and Media.
I have been invited by Prof Fiorenzo Omenetto to give a lecture to Biomedical Engineering students at Tufts University, Boston (MA) on “Silk, the Bio- Digital, and its Potential to induce Alternative Futures”.
