CONFERENCE — 'CONVERSATION' FOR DRS 2016 / by Veronica Ranner

— 27th JUNE 2016

Building upon my previous research into modes of 'futuring' and complexity, I collaborated with Dr Dan Lockton to develop a DRS conversation with the title "Plans and Speculated Actions". The 'conversation' format at DRS replaces the usual workshops in favour of more conversational explorations and experimentations in progress.

An overview of the themes for the 'conversation' format at DRS 2016. The session asked the participants to respond to different themes that the organisers and invited catalysts provided in form of a short narrative. The themes were: "Shikake Inc. — The Human Body platform (by Veronica Ranner)", "bestie Your Smart Advisor" (by Dan Lockton), "Let’s make a smarter planet”— IBM" (by Gyorgyi Galik), "The Brick House" (by Molly Steenson), "Donor Pigs" (by Tobie Kerridge).

The conversation 'Plans and Speculated Actions' took place in the Brighton Dome on Tuesday 28th June at DRS2016 Conference in Brighton and was accompanied by invited 'catalysts', such as Dr Molly Wright Steenson (Carnegie Mellon University), Gyorgyi Galik (Future Cities Catapult) and Dr Tobie Kerridge (Goldsmiths)

The abstract:

In the last decades, much design research around “future-focused thinking” has come to prominence in relation to changes in human behaviour, at different scales, from the Quantified Self, to visions of smart cities, to Transition Design. The design of products, services, environments and systems plays an important role in affecting what people do, now and in the future: what has become known in recent years as design for behaviour change. Our Conversation is motivated by three, interlinked questions: on designers’ agency; on sense-making; and on complexity. We collectively explore considerations of people, and people’s behaviour, in design, particularly in the ways visions of futures are drafted.

Keywords: futures; complexity; speculative design; behaviour change
